    All Music Guide Review

For the faithful, there's something about mass choir recordings that just delivers. The message is basically the same, the powerful singing and choir arrangements have a certain similarity no matter the church, but if the energy's there, hallelujah! You have to dig into the liner notes a bit to figure out where this church is (Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Nashville), but it only takes a few minutes to realize this is one praise-happy church. The songs run the usual gamut, from knee slapping way out and wild ("Lift the Name of Jesus") to the more subtle and bluesy "Let Everything That Hath Breath." Many CDs of this ilk incorporate modern R&B elements into the mix, but this one limits the instrumentation to what fits on the pulpit, to great result. There's a bit of world beat energy as well with the call and response, South African-flavored "High Praise." There are a few pleasantly mellow spots as well, such as the powerful ballad "Lamb of God/Just As I Am" sung by Duawne Starling. Also unlike a lot of church based projects, this one allows different vocalists to tackle each tune (with the exception of Judith McAllister, who leads on two). All worship albums offer praises, but few are as worthy to receive it as well. This one is. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi
