All Music Guide Review

As Slowdive went ambient, then mutated into the Mazzy Star-ish Mojave 3, a cluster of excellent U.S. bands took their original cue, a lush witch's brew of the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine. San Francisco five Dora Flood join Half String, Alison's Halo, Mistle Thrush, and others in this stew; but chew out new ground with '60s-psychedelia touches. "Afterglow" and "Said" reprise the hazy, biting quality of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play," or old Rain Parade, while "Faith in Doubt" is Colin Newman's "Alone" (off 1980'S XYZ, later heard in Silence of the Lambs playing in the killer's house!) in new clothes. Overall, the louder, compressed guitar offsets the luxurious, laconic nature of MICHAEL PADILLA's songs and singing. LP! LP! ~ Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, All Music Guide
