This compilation presents a potent if scattershot look at the early years of the soul music revolution. There's little in the way of a common thread; everything from the Impressions' obscure "Shorty's Gotta Go" (recorded on Bandera Records) to Richard Berry & the Pharoahs' pulsating "Have Love Will Travel" is featured. With few exceptions (i.e., the Spinners' "That's What Girls Are Made For," Ike & Tina Turner's "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and Wilson Pickett's "It's Too Late"), most of these tracks are hard to find on CD. The set includes rare Motown tracks: Jimmy Ruffin's "Don't Feel Sorry for Me" (his first recording), the Miracles' "If Your Mother Only Knew" (the flip side of "Way Over There"), and Carolyn Crawford's "When Someone Is Good to You" (her final and least-known Motown single).
