Even though it only has ten tracks, The Best of Gladys Knight & the Pips: Columbia Years is an exhaustive look at Gladys Knight & the Pips' brief tenure at Columbia Records in the early '80s. They only had two hits, "Landlord" and "Save the Overtime (For Me)," during those years, and those didn't even crack the Top 40. Both are here, along with several failed singles and album tracks. The hits are moderately enjoyable as period pieces, but Knight was not at the top of her form in the early '80s, as the rest of this collection shows. For serious fans who want a sampling of every aspect of Knight's career, this is of interest, but most listeners won't find much here. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
