    All Music Guide Review

The Chimes didn't last long enough to have a proper retrospective (just one proper album in their three years of existence), and so 2001's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For recycles the entirety of 1990's The Chimes almost out of necessity, taking the title of their most famous track, a gospel reworking of the U2 hit. In its favor, it does plump for the single mixes when applicable, so the album doesn't merely sound like it's the original LP on shuffle play. More to the point, the album still sounds fresh over a decade on; unlike the more famous Soul II Soul, the Chimes' mix of Pauline Henry's soulful, rich voice and the producers' deceptively cool blend of percussion and electronics don't rely as much on gimmickry and fads. The addition of four extra tracks previously available only on singles -- "So Much in Love," "No Need to Pretend," "Ready for Love," and an entirely different take of the sublime "Heaven" with an earthier, more organic feel -- makes this a treasure for the Chimes' completist, but those who have the original LP might not bother to make the switch. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
