Fans of the New York Latin sound of the '60s will love this collection of tracks from the vaults of the Tico, Fania, and Allegre labels. The decade witnessed the transition of Cuban/Puerto Rican music from the mambo style of Tito Puente to the sounds of early salsa and boogaloo; "old school" acts like Machito continued to make fine recordings while newer artists like Celia Cruz and Eddie Palmieri were heralding the new sound. Along with Johnny Colon, Joe Cuba, Candido, and Charlie Palmieri, these Latin luminaries are all featured on this fine collection. Highlights include mambos by Puente ("Ran Kan Kan") and Machito ("Alex Mambo"), as well as boogaloos from Pete Rodriguez ("Pete's Boogaloo") and Charlie Palmieri ("Ay Que Rico"). Other memorable moments include Celia Cruz's duet with Ray Barreto ("El Chisme") and her vocal on the Fania All Stars' "Bamboleo," as well as percussion workouts by Puente ("Tito On Timbales") and Eddie Palmieri ("Carnaval En Camaguey").
