All Music Guide Review
Though not as fabulous as their previous effort, Creatures of Leisure, Fundamental comes awfully close. With legendary producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Yachts, etc.) at the controls, the Mentals' fifth album was their most commercial yet. Though Wayne Delisle's sure and steady drumming is muddled in fake drum sounds, the band is still on fire and serving up oodles of great songs. This time, keyboardist Greedy Smith dominates with some of the band's biggest hits, including "You're So Strong," "Date With Destiny," and the perfect pop of "Live It Up." Martin Plaza lights up the album by penning "Big Wheel," "Bus Ride," and "Good Friday" and lends his awesome pipes to Peter O'Doherty's "Hold On" and Reg Mombassa's "Splashing." O'Doherty and Mombassa handle a few of their own songs as well, making this another showcase for all five talented members. Though it has the most "dated" production of all their albums, Fundamental is an apt title to say the least. Another great album from one of Australia's finest outfits. ~ Stephen SPAZ Schnee, All Music Guide
