    All Music Guide Review

Actually, Roots of Metal comes closer to representing the heyday of heavy metal. From Status Quo to Motorhead, all kinds of '70s arena hard rock and metal are covered; over the course of the disc, it becomes clear that metal does not all sound the same -- there's quite a difference between the thuggish Wishbone Ash, the melodic Cheap Trick, the snarling Runaways, and the bloated blues of Beck, Bogert and Appice. Some of it holds up surprisingly well, and some of it is embarrassing, but there's no question that it captures its era particularly well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
