    Mtume participated in the soundtrack for this poorly distributed, uneven remake of the film conceived out of the landmark novel by Richard Wright, who appeared in an earlier version. Oprah Winfrey was in the cast for this edition, but her presence didn't ensure them the widespread distribution or publicity necessary to salvage it. The soundtrack was quite similar to the film -- strong at times, but disjointed and ultimately disappointing. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
