This jam session was supposed to be led by violinist Joe Venuti, but his unexpected death led to vibraphonist Red Norvo (in view of his seniority) becoming the nominal leader. The all-star group (which also includes Buddy Tate on tenor, trombonist Urbie Green, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Steve LaSpina and drummer Barrett Deems) plays loosely but coherently on lengthy versions of "Green Dolphin Street," "Undecided" and "Just Friends" in addition to a more concise "Here's That Rainy Day" and a two-song ballad medley. Nothing all that historic occurs, but there are many fine solos from the principles during these informal jams. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
