Neil Young has never been afraid to show the "unglamorous" side of rock & roll (his classic 1975 album Tonight's the Night, his rarely seen 1986 documentary Muddy Track, etc.). And with his 1997 film/home video/DVD Year of the Horse, Young and acclaimed director Jim Jarmusch lets the viewer see behind the scenes of life on the road for a rock band, warts and all. Along with its many interviews with Young, his band Crazy Horse, and even Young's father, you get to see many outstanding live performances, recorded during a 1997 European Tour. Musical highlights include one of the most harrowing and intense versions of "Tonight's the Night" ever, as well as the furious punk rocker "Sedan Delivery," the rarely performed "Barstool Blues," and a version of "Like a Hurricane" that includes vintage clips of the band jamming away. Also included are further past clips (taken from a 1976 and 1986 Euro-tour) and an oral and pictorial history of Crazy Horse, in which we learn more about their original leader/guitarist Danny Whitten and longtime producer David Briggs (both now deceased). Year of the Horse is easily one of the best and most realistic on-tour documentaries of recent times, with an abundance of great performances to boot. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
