The Okeh label is best known for its recordings of the 1920s but it actually lasted on and off into the '50s. This double LP reissues a variety of formerly rare recordings by tenor-saxophonist Arnett Cobb (spirited R&Bish performances), tenor Johnny Griffin in 1954 (his first session as a leader), trumpeter Red Rodney (a fine jump date from 1952), pianist Ahmad Jamal and his 1951-52 trio, organist Wild Bill Davis (including a version of "April in Paris" that was used as the framework for Count Basie's big hit) and singer Mary Ann McCall. This historic music is not available on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
