This out-of-print LP features bassist Oscar Pettiford on two different occasions. He is heard on four songs under the leadership of baritonist Serge Chaloff (these have since been reissued on a Mosaic CD set) and with such fine players as trumpeter Red Rodney, tenor saxophonist Al Cohn and vibraphonist Terry Gibbs; Pettiford was with Woody Herman's Orchestra at the time. While those pieces are quite concise, of greater interest are six performances (including the 9½-minute "Burt's Pad") from a 1954 sextet date with trombonist Kai Winding, Cohn and guitarist Tal Farlow. The bassist is well featured on "Stardust," and on "Rhumblues," Pettiford overdubbed himself on cello. Interesting bop-oriented music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
