    All Music Guide Review

The final entry in this excellent three-volume set digs even deeper into the dark terrain that was New England rock & roll back in the late 1950s and early '60s. Some of the artists featured on this volume are nothing more than a name inked on a scratchy acetate, or in the case of the Vectors from Hillsboro, New Hampshire, a band name on a 45 that sports no logo whatsoever. The rarities come in the form of "I Love My Baby" by the Phaetons (issued on the Jackson, Mississippi Ace label subsidiary Vin, causing collectors for years to refer to them as a New Orleans group), Johnny Dee and the El Dorados' white-boy waxing of "Linda Lee," and one of the wildest records ever to emerge out of New England, Mel McGonnigle's "Rattle Shakin' Mama." Equally high-energy offerings from Bobby Kent and the Kentones (the piano-poundin' "Don't Go Away"), Frankie Rose and the Imperials (who clock in with three unissued sides, including a blistering take of "Long Tall Sally"), the Tri-Tones ("Flipped" and the subterranean-sounding "Shumwaa"), Georgie Manis ('the Greek Elvis') and Johnny Gamble ("Wicked Woman" and "Seventh Heaven") round out this excellent compilation and series. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
