All Music Guide Review

Originally released by Capitol and later leased to Stan Kenton's Creative World label, this LP has some of arranger Johnny Richards' better writing from his prime period. Utilizing a 17-piece band of major players from New York, Richards comes up with fresh and frequently exciting renditions of seven standards and three of his originals. With the exception of "Cimarron" (which clocks in just over six minutes), the performances are pretty brief; in fact, "So Beats My Heart for You" is under two minutes. There are concise solos throughout the date by trumpeters Burt Collins and Doug Mettome, altoist Gene Quill (showcased on "The Ballad of Tappan Zee"), pianist Hank Jones, Frank Socolow on tenor and trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, among others. Highlights include "Walkin'," "Nina Never Knew," "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and a faster than usual version of "The Nearness of You." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
