Most of the releases put out by Vinny Golia's Nine Winds label fall into the avant-garde area. Although this recording is fairly advanced, it is a bit more straight-ahead than one might expect from Nine Winds. Altoist Kim Richmond, who is best known as a big-band arranger, performs six of his originals (plus "Nardis," "Solar" and "I Thought About You") with a sextet also including tenor saxophonist John Gross, valve trombonist Mike Fahn, pianist Tad Weed (Wayne Peet takes his place on "I Thought About You"), bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Billy Mintz. Richmond, who plays the EWI on a few tunes, gives the pieces adventurous arrangements that keep the music from ever becoming too predictable. A stimulating set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
