Rivera was probably the true originator of the trombone conjunto sound associated with early Eddie Palmieri and Willie Colon. But he was also an important figure in the period when Puerto Rican influences in general and the pleña and bomba in particular were at their peak in New York salsa. And most basically he was a fine (and at times comic) singer with a smoking band. ~ John Storm Roberts, Rovi
