All Around Cowboy is the final cowboy album Marty Robbins ever recorded, and it stands out as one of the best of his latter-day records. Though many of his latter-day recordings were hampered by mediocre material and indifferent performances, Robbins sounds lively on All Around Cowboy, breathing life into the songs and assembling a collection of terrific Western tunes. The production relies a little too heavily on contemporary late-'70s trends, but Robbins' convincing performances make those flaws easy to ignore. All Around Cowboy may pale slightly compared to his early cowboy classics like Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, but it's heartwarming to hear him this committed at a time when it often sounded like he was losing faith in the music. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
