Lyrics from Seen/Unseen: A Benefit For The Evergreen Center For Street Youth
All Music Guide Review
Pulling together a diverse roster of talent with a wide range of sounds, Seen/Unseen features unreleased rarities from familiar names and first looks at little known artists, with all proceeds going to Toronto's Evergreen Center for Street Youth. Particularly of note, Frank Black puts on his best Neil Young falsetto while leading the Catholics through a soulful "I Will Run After You," followed in short order by the Czars' stark Nick Cave-ish live rendition of "Caterpillar." Similarly attractive for completists, Sixteen Horsepower contributes the swirling agitation of "Clogger" matched in counterpoint with Giant Sand's rolling "Chore of Enchantment." But most interesting are the wildly tribal sounds, almost a merging of Eastern European and African traditions, in Psalters' "We're All Lepers Here," and the psychedelic plinky lute-ish picking combined with processed beats of Dan Donovan's hypnotic "Holy Bull," as the collection jumps from contemporary singer/songwriter sounds to indie pop and more electronic-oriented tracks. Altogether, an interesting and consistently enjoyable set of 15 songs for a great cause. ~ Matt Fink, All Music Guide
