When a title as broad as Big Hits 1980-2000: Pop appears on an album, that is usually a sign that the compilation was thrown together with whatever songs they could get the rights to without any thought. But whether it was on purpose or not, the 30 songs found on this album fit together very nicely. Such guilty pleasures as Irene Cara's "Flashdance (What A Feeling)" and Joshua Kadison's "Jessie" sit side by side with underrated (and sadly forgotten) pop hits, like Tasmin Archer's brooding "Sleeping Satellite." Like most of these compilations, there are a few songs that were obviously never big hits. And of course, a few songs have aged terribly, like Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" (which may be just another guilty pleasure for some, but does not fit on this compilation). But still, this is a surprisingly good collection of good pop songs that can reach out to a variety of listeners. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
