    All Music Guide Review

16 Horsepower is a band that has been rather consistent for its first several albums. Every album features the tortured, harrowing wail of David Eugene Edwards, with a Southern gothic/alt-country mix backing him up. An early release, the Heel on the Shovel EP perfectly demonstrates what the band is capable of. Besides the title track (which comes from their first full-length, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes), the three extra tracks tell of haunted men, vengeful lovers, and demonizin'. These three tracks are certainly good enough to have been on Sackcloth 'n' Ashes. Despite its scarcity, this EP is well worth hunting down for any fans of the genre, or just for those interested in a contrast to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' Murder Ballads. ~ Jeremy Salmon, All Music Guide
