All Music Guide Review

Smashing! Not only was "Last Chance" the second-best song -- behind "Can't Stop These Things" -- on this northern English band's stupendous debut LP, Goosefair (released here by a Sony subsidiary), but it also represents China Drum's rosy future. Unlike the more typical punk-pop of "Can't Stop..." (as powerful and wickedly catchy as it is), this committed, passionate hard pop territory will appeal more to all underground fans, not just punk fans (though I swear that that crossover hint is all over Goosefair), while still being as aggressive and full-on. Anyone who wants to hear incredibly gripping guitar pop with more balls, energy, and most of all heart than 500 so-so U.S. indie bands, this is the place! Even more so since the first two B-sides are similarly mature stabs, making this EP seem more like a "new direction" release rather than just another single off a crackin' album. "Walk" and especially "Cut Them Out" are grossly superior to most of the LP, with exceptional melodies and playing. OK, "Careful With That Chieftain Adam" is a stupid, silly throwaway that should never have left the recording studio until the surprise ending, but by then you're plenty hooked. Note: "Last Chance" is inspired by frustration over British inactivity concerning Bosnia, where the band has even played gigs -- but the sentiment is cleverly hidden in the lyrics. ~ Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, All Music Guide
