Sentimental Sun, Vol. 1 is a showcase for the vast array of rockabilly and country musicians who recorded at the Sun studios in the '50s and '60s. The songs here are mostly ballads, with very little up-tempo material to be found. What this leaves are 25 songs that mostly cover the same ground -- twangy ballads about relationships. This is fine for a while; in fact, there are some great numbers from Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Billy Lee Riley, and Anita Wood. But after a while the singers begin to blend together, especially the lesser-known artists featured. How a listener would enjoy this completely hinges on how much rock and country balladeering they can take, but none of these songs are really that bad. It just so happens that there are a lot of them, taking the impact of these songs away significantly. Fans of the artists found here will probably enjoy this very much, but curious listeners should be warned that there is quite a lot of material here that is not easily absorbed in one sitting. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
