    Gimme Shelter offers a truly panoramic view of the origins of funk, eschewing musical and racial boundaries to document the union of rock, psychedelia, and soul that gave birth to the almighty groove. Sly & the Family Stone's Woodstock anthem "I Want to Take You Higher" exemplifies the disc's ambitions -- they were the first truly integrated group in pop history, comprising men and women as well as whites and blacks, but they would not be the last, and many of the artists featured here offer similarly mixed lineups, resulting in music rooted not simply in pop but also blues and jazz.
