Demis Roussos tries very hard to maintain the image of a lovesick sap whose voice quivers with every word. That has worked against him many times in the past, even dulling the impact of his overall career (which has included some great material). But on Morning Has Broken, he uses his voice for the two things it is good for: sappy Kenny G-style ballads and gorgeous Leonard Cohen-style laments. Of course, filtered through Roussos, both of these styles get changed significantly. His smooth jazz ballads end up sounding like Peter Gabriel with a thinner voice, while his Cohen-esque moments are given a pop sheen that even Cohen himself sometimes gives his own songs. Either way, Roussos scores again with this poppy, commercial record that keeps his sentimental tendencies at bay and emphasizes his strengths. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
