The fine Puerto Rican singer Daniel Santos is heard to excellent effect on this budget-line disc from RCA. Cut during 1941, the 14 sides find Santos backed by the band of his longtime New York collaborator, Pedro Flores. A spot with Xavier Cugat's band just a few years away, Santos made hits out of the many Flores songs heard here, including "Despedida," "Perdon," and "Venganza." The sophisticated mix ranges through rhumba, bolero, and conjunto-style material, with Santos taking center stage thanks to a smooth and romantically inclined set of pipes. Most of the hits, many classy arrangements, and enough vintage Latin atmospherics to make that next rhumba party a success. Enjoy. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
