The second compilation to collect the best from the Fenetik imprint again bucks the dancefloor orientated styles favoured by its Glaswegian mothership Soma in favour of some post-club bliss. A series of impressive singles from the label have flipped the switch from hip hop to house and this 15-track collection reflects this philosophy with a body of work rich with strolling percussion and warm melodic rises, where vintage keys skim the tops of the arrangements. At first glance the subdued synth back end of Ireland's Calculus couldn't be more different to the more lively sounds of Sidewinder, but it slowly becomes apparent that the artists are linked through a shared appreciation of soul and rare groove, with each colourful cut offering its own widescreen view of the instrumental underbelly of hip hop. Pablo's "Role Call" offers a fine metaphor for this spirit of the label, programmed modernity represented by percussion crinkled by the sampler while a much more organic horn section brings the funk before a sleazy, cop theme melody makes its getaway through box strewn alleys of bass. This ability to act outside of any single pigeonhole is Fenetik's reson d'etre, with the breadth of ground covered by some very different artists nothing but a testament to the A&R ear of label manager Paul Cawley. ~ Kingsley Marshall, All Music Guide
