Greg Lowry

Former Eddie Money sideman Greg Lowry makes his solo attempt on Can You See the Light. His songwriting style is similar to his former boss' style, and Money appears on four of the ten tracks here, which almost makes this feel like outtakes from an Eddie Money session. There are only two things wrong with that description. First of all, the music is too simple and underproduced to really capture the sound that Lowry is looking for, and the songs are not quite up to par with the '80s hard rock hits that this sounds so much like. There are still some good songs here; the Springsteen-lite of "Restless Heart" reveals a strong ear for hooks, while the powerful rises and dips in "I'm Comin" sees Money sounding better than he has in years. Lowry has a real talent for this type of music, and with time he could really be a top-notch songwriter. It only makes it that much sadder that poor Lowry really has no outlet for this sort of music; keyboard-driven hard rock fell out of fashion in the late '80s with no real sign of coming back.
