This circa-1970 collection of some of Erich Korngold's most famous film themes is a fine place for newcomers to start. And while the originals are preferable, they aren't always easy to track down. Plus, this set features stellar readings by the National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Charles Gerhardt and some fine production work by the maestro's son, George Korngold. As far as the selections go, the set features a good dose of Korngold's familiar epic-adventure material from The Sea Hawk, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Captain Blood. The album also takes in plenty of dramatic backdrops from more scaled-down celluloid classics like Deception, Of Human Bondage, and The Constant Nymph. Man the decks and sharpen your swords. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
