    All Music Guide Review

New age label Windham Hill offers up 11 melodic contemporary instrumentals on Songs Without Words, Vol. 2, the follow-up to their successful earlier volume. These solo piano pieces from performers Janis Ian, David Benoit, Jim Brickman, Michael Feinstein, and others are exactly what the title suggests; not just instrumentals but songs where the melody line is clear and strong enough to suggest a single voice being accompanied by a piano with no lyrics necessary. Surprisingly, Windham Hill's flagship pianist, George Winston, doesn't make an appearance here, but his rich and textured style wouldn't have fit into these parameters anyway. Instead, the performers deliver gentle pop songs on piano without any troubling intrusions from orchestration or even words. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide
