    All Music Guide Review

Salsa Selecta: A Taste of Nuyorican Latin Flavours is a fitting title for this collection of '60s and '70s salsa; none of the artists can be considered among the best New York salseros of the era (Mongo Santamaria is the only exception), but for listeners looking to dig a little deeper than the usual Colon/Palmieri/Puente triumvirate, this one does a good job. The compilers skimmed tracks from some great labels -- Tico, Fania, Vaya, and Alegre -- and put the spotlight on neglected second-rank artists like Bobby Valentin, Willie Rosario, Fuego '77, Larry Harlow's Latin Fever, and Orlando Marin. Highlights come on Valentin's "Guarambembere," Rosario's "Arrepentios Pecadores," and "Cantandole al Amor," featuring Santamaria and Justo Betancourt. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
