Doo Wop Underground collects 56 rare doo wop obscurities in a two-disc set. Most of these tracks are loose, ragged affairs with very little polish, but tons of attitude and energy. The opening track,"Skitter Skatter" by the Metrotones, sets up the template, with a driving sax riff, indecipherable lyrics, and energy to burn. "Beans," by the Superbs, is just what it says it is, a song about legumes that is as fun as it is absurd, with a lead vocal that sounds like a young, frustrated James Brown. There are two completely different songs here called"I'm Really Too Young," one by the Nobletones, and the other by the Noble Tones, two completely different groups, which adds to the slightly surreal, alternative doo wop feel of this collection. True fans of the genre will love this set. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
