    All Music Guide Review

Since most punk rock groups cut all ties with their musical influences and forefathers, the prospect of a punk covers album is immediately suspect. All Covered in Punk rises above its motley origins, however, by combining tracks from a few punk-era bands who made a point of saluting their elders, along with some from the raucous end of punk who wielded their covers as weapons of satire. Examples of the former include the Jam's reverent version of "David Watts" by the Kinks, the Rich Kids' outboard cover of "Here Comes the Nice" by the Small Faces, and the Sex Pistols' "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," originally done by a host of American garage bands during the '60s -- and only popularized by TV stars like Paul Revere & the Raiders and the Monkees. Examples of the latter include the Elvis-pillaging "Viva Las Vegas" by the Dead Kennedys, the nearly unrecognizable "Nights in White Satin" by the Dickies, and the most infamous cover in punk history, Sid Vicious' snarling, piss-drunk version of Frank Sinatra's "My Way." One track even finds punk rockers covering other punk rockers, on Chelsea's version of "Somebody Got Murdered," originally by the Clash. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
