Sloan's first release owes a lot to Sonic Youth, but the makings of the quintessential pop band to come were evident here on "Sugartune," Patrick Pentland's power-pop treasure; "Pretty Voice," which showcases Jay Ferguson's wistful vocals and penchant for songwriting; and several of Chris Murphy's tracks, which display his talent for witty lyrics and unforgettable melodies. (Only drummer Andrew Scott's voice is silent on the EP.) Endearingly sloppy and sweet, Peppermint was just a glimpse of things to come. Three of the tracks -- "Marcus Said," "Sugartune" and "Underwhelmed" (here in an early, hypnotic version) -- made it to the band's first full-length release, Smeared. ~ Gina Boldman, All Music Guide
