For the soul fan looking to dig a little deeper than established classics, this is probably more exciting than the previous ballad collection in this series. McKinley Mitchell, Spyder Turner, Betty Harris, Jimmy Holiday -- they're all names known primarily to collectors, and they're all represented here. So are stars like The Impressions, Chuck Jackson, the Dells, and O.V. Wright, but the tracks are not among the famous hits. Especially interesting are the original versions of "Get It While You Can" (by Howard Tate), later covered by Janis Joplin, and "You Can Make It If You Try" (by Gene Allison), covered by The Rolling Stones on their first album. Other highlights are Jay Wiggins' "Sad Girl," one of the most haunting soul ballads ever, and Gloria Walker's "Talking About My Baby," one of the most deliciously bitchy and spiteful female soul performances, despite the fact that it rips off Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind." ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
