After exploring the '70s in Vol. 1 and the '60s in Vol. 2, the third volume in what seems to be an ongoing series drops back another decade to compile 18 tracks, almost all from the late '50s. Except for the Tarriers' -- whose members included a young Alan Arkin -- "Banana Boat Song" (which charted Top Five at the same time Harry Belafonte's version was popular), this is an obvious and not especially imaginatively selected compilation of well-worn hits. Almost all appear on countless other '50s anthologies and, except for well-written and enlightening background information about each song (that's Carole King playing kettle drums on the Shirelles' version of her "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?"), most anyone interested in this era already owns these tunes. That doesn't detract from the presentation, which includes excellent sound and detailed track information, but it leaves this as a rather short 45-minute collection that only adds to the glut of similar discs already in print without distinguishing itself in any unique way. ~ Hal Horowitz, All Music Guide
