    All Music Guide Review

The first volume of Collectables' Ultimate Jukebox Hits of the '70s provides a scattershot glance at the music of that decade, ranging from hard rock (Boston's "More Than a Feeling," the Guess Who's "American Woman," Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper") to funk (Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again," Labelle's "Lady Marmalade") to a diverse batch of relatively laid-back fare (Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee," Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime," Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now," Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle," the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"). The range of moods is too wide to serve as background music for any one particular activity (neither a party nor Sunday morning ambience), and the selection is too broad to fit any one specialty. Also, these songs are available in many other forms -- Collectables is hardly plugging a gap in the market. So, the only instance in which this disc serves a purpose is a special occasion when a certain song is needed in a jam. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
