Jarvis Church's debut, Shake It Off, an amalgamation of hip-hop, soul, and R&B that recall the likes of Prince and Jamiroquai, is a solid album that displays Church's talents well. Church, formerly known as Gerald Eaton, first rose to fame as frontman for the Canadian acid jazz sextet known collectively as the Philosopher Kings, which released three rather successful albums throughout the '90s, including the 1997 release Famous, Rich and Beautiful, which achieved platinum status. Church leaves his signature style behind on Shake It Off, instead introducing a new personality, singing syrupy sweet love songs that ooze with seductive passion. Shake It Off has its share of guest appearances, including Esthero's performance on "Run for Your Life" and close friend Nelly Furtado laying down her infectious vocals on one of the album's best cuts, "Fine Line." This isn't the first time Furtado has collaborated with Church, as he helped write much of her acclaimed 2000 debut, Whoa, Nelly! When teamed up, the duo complement each other's unique styles. Aiding Church in the production of Shake It Off is Brian West, who teamed with him before when working on Whoa, Nelly! as well as playing guitar in the Philosopher Kings. The new musical direction allows Church to explore his own spirituality and emotion, and while many of the album's tracks are over-produced love songs, they sound classy and genuine. Shake It Off is a fresh start for this man of many talents, and a thoroughly invigorating listen. ~ Jason D. Taylor, Rovi
