This sampler was released in April 2002 and distributed with issue number three of the British label Voiceprint's promotional magazine, Newsprint, with additional copies made available through mail order for a short while. The 18 tracks highlight the label's new releases for the first quarter of 2002. The wide array of music covered by Voiceprint and its numerous subsidiaries makes the task of assembling a sampler very difficult and, as expected, one finds absolutely no coherence in the track list, jumping from the Sound's new wave anthem "Winning" to John Martyn's soft blues and Jansen/Barbieri/Karn's fusion. The only common thread here is the fact that all these artists were first active in the 1960s (Giles, Giles & Fripp, Hawkwind), 1970s (the Fall, Harold Budd), or 1980s (Talk Talk, Fish). All tracks are taken from the albums, except for Bill Nelson's "Kinda Fuzzy," an exclusive track that turns out to be the CD's highlight. Don't be fooled by Heligoland's rendition of "Purple Haze." Not listed in the track list of the first album by Tim Friese-Greene's solo project, it is nonetheless included as a "hidden" track. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
