Mild-mannered breakbeat collections began their rise to replace the euphoric Ibiza-themed compilations that had dominated the shelves of dance music record shops throughout 2001. As such, it's a little difficult to get excited about Breakscape, which further cluttered the aforementioned racking with tales of downtempo derring-do. However, Kickin's Compulsive imprint was all too aware of the saturated breakbeat bazaar, and chose to avoid the usual singles in favor of a trawl through some of the better artist albums of the preceding year. Hence, all the usual suspects stand front and center, but are wielding beats that are likely to have escaped the attention of all but the most hardened crate diggers. As such, Breakscape is something of a garden of earthly delights, where Ninja Tune veteran Mr. Scruff and slow-motion primate Bonobo rub shoulders with the harpsichord-wielding J Walk and the philosophical side of Tru Thoughts soul man Quantic. There are plenty of highlights, although the opening offering from Native Force and cuts from sleepy sample masters Bent and Pepper's chill connoisseurs Kinobe steal the show with their respective "Private Road" and "Skyscraper." ~ Kingsley Marshall, All Music Guide
