This edition of Rhino's Smooth Grooves series concentrates on songs that would be perfect for a weekend at a nightclub -- songs you can slow dance or groove to, not dancefloor ravers (with a notable exception or two). Nearly half of the songs are from 1980, with many more dating between 1981 and 1984; the compilation dips back into the '70s for Ashford & Simpson's "It Seems to Hang On," People's Choice's "Do It Any Way You Wanna," and Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" (which may have been influential on this scene, but still sounds out of place). There are a couple of rarities here -- a 12" mix of Kano's "I'm Ready," an extended version of Oliver Cheatham's "Get Down Saturday Night," the single version of Marvin Gaye's "Sanctified Lady" -- but this isn't for collectors, it's for listeners that want to groove, and it works quite well in that regard. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
