    Gospel, Vol. 2: Gospel Quartets 1921-1942 is the second volume of three in Fremeaux & Associes' dedication to gospel music, and while its contents are just as engaging as volume one, it becomes a bit more tedious than Gospel, Vol. 1: 1926-1942 only because of its sharp spotlight on the development of vocal quartets. Those looking for a diversity of styles within early gospel recordings should stick with the first volume (which also covers some ground in the vocal quartet arena -- so one shouldn't feel left out of the loop), but for those who wish to get lost in the confines of vocal quartets only, this collection is the place to start. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music Guide
