As the cradle of progressive rock in the early '70s, Harvest Records' fame rests on the complex, ponderous art rock of acts like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, and the Edgar Broughton Band -- that the label would ever release anything that could remotely earn the description "funky" would seem to fly in the face of all conventional wisdom, yet somehow here is Art School Dancing, a 17-track smorgasbord documenting the prog movement at its most rhythmically liberated. Make no mistake -- none of the music here is going to give the J.B.'s a run for their money, but there's no denying the propulsive energy at the core of these songs, either; rarely does progressive rock appeal as much to the body as it does to the mind. Highlights include Kevin Ayers' "Singing a Song in the Morning," Babe Ruth's "King Kong," and Electric Light Orchestra's "Look at Me Now." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
