This is light years ahead of his Capitol debut, the amateurish, weak Stronghold; Live & Love has better songs, arrangements, and instrumentation. He adequately revives his only hit "Money (That's What I Want)" and Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood." The excellent "Man Up in the Sky" had hit potential, a moving number with a spiritual theme; Johnny Bristol's version of this Barrett Strong/Billy Always composition achieved some popularity in Europe, and most people associate the song with Bristol. A good effort, but people expected more from the co-writer of classics the stature of "Ball of Confusion," "War," "Friendship Train," "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby," and others. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
