Before moving to A&M Records, Styx only had one major hit for Wooden Nickel -- "Lady." Not surprisingly, that song served as the title for BMG Special Products' budget-priced sampler of the band's Wooden Nickel material. Truth be told, it does a very good job of rounding up the highlights from the label, simply because there weren't that many great moments on those early albums anyway. All three of the group's charting single for the label -- "Best Thing," "Lady" and "You Need Love" are here, along with such album tracks as "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It," "Rock & Roll Feeling," "Witch Wolf" and "The Grove of Eglantine." Apart from the "Lady," most of the songs here are simply not very interesting, but for any Styx fan wanting an inexpensive collection featuring the group's best early material, this isn't a bad choice, despite the lack of liner notes, haphazard sequencing and cheap packaging. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
