All Music Guide Review

Alcoholism and a lack of business sense resulted in the talented stride pianist Joe Sullivan being obscure for his last 20 years (he died in 1971). Richard Hadlock taped Sullivan playing piano solos at the Trident club in San Francisco during 1963, and they were released on this 1983 Pumpkin LP; these are the only recordings of Sullivan as a leader after 1955. In general, the pianist (even with a few minor missteps) is heard in good form, playing his usual repertoire of veteran swing tunes and songs associated with Fats Waller (along with his own "My Little Pride and Joy"). Because he was still only 57 at the time, it is a shame that this album (plus his appearance with Jack Teagarden at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival) was essentially the end of Joe Sullivan's career. Worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
