Though they're one of the most imaginative remix teams in dance music, Chateau Flight (the duo of Gilb'r and I:Cube) doesn't enjoy the high profile of teams at the same level, like Jazzanova or Kruder & Dorfmeister. (Part of the answer lies in the fact that both members enjoy fruitful "solo" careers.) Whatever the reason, Versatile's full-length collection Remixent is the perfect antidote to any potential obscurity, collecting 14 post-productions for trip-hop artists (Air, P'Taah, Peace Orchestra), broken beat artists (Seiji, Joakim Lone Octet, Pavel Kostiuk), pop artists (Serge Gainsbourg, Bebel Gilberto), African artists (Femi Kuti, Manu Dibango), and even a contemporary composer (Pierre Henry). Gilb'r and I:Cube's imagination and production expertise knows no bounds, and they're smart enough to range from radical reimaginings to subtle reworkings. For an example of the former, check out the duo's reverse-engineering of Bebel Gilberto into an electro-disco diva on "August Day Song"; for the latter, listen to the heavy Afro-beat and dense rhythm on their reversion of Femi Kuti's "Beng, Beng, Beng." An early track by Air becomes a broken beat mammoth (they're a dead ringer for Carl Craig on the boards), and the duo return to Detroit later for a sublime remix of "Ritual" by Brandy (no, not that Brandy.). Chateau Flight don't really have a style (or just one style) to call their own; instead, they create a new interpretation for each track that comes their way, and often do it better than the original. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
