Released under the title of "The Bob Thiele Collective," this is actually a quartet set featuring tenor saxophonist David Murray, pianist John Hicks, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Andrew Cyrille. A ballad date, the only heated selection ("Sunrise Sunset") is given a groove similar to the one John Coltrane used on "My Favorite Things." As strong as the rhythm section is, Murray easily emerges as the main star. He sounds quite original on the standards (which include "Body and Soul," "Old Folks" and "You Don't Know What Love Is") while paying homage to the warm sounds of past tenor masters, particularly Ben Webster and Don Byas. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
