Seventy-one at the time of this quintet set, veteran trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison was no longer in prime form. He still played in a similar style as he sounded in the 1950s, but his trumpet chops were a little erratic and his tone was weaker than a few years earlier. There is typical joy and wit in Sweets' playing, but also an uncertainty that he will make it through his solos without a clam or missed note. Joined by a four-piece rhythm section that includes Hendrik Meurkens on vibes and piano, Edison does his best on such jam tunes as Dizzy Gillespie's "Ow," a lengthy rendition of "Wave," "Cottontail," "In a Mellow Tone," and his "Centerpiece." This set is mostly recommended to his greatest fans; most other listeners should instead first get Edison's earlier records. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
