A three-disc set that acts as a brief but surprisingly imaginative history lesson on techno, Cream Collect: Techno begins with later material from the early 2000s and works its way backwards, sort of, hitting upon mid-'90s U.K. techno and offering a major smattering of Detroit selections. Opening up with a bracing one-two combination of Green Velvet's "La La Land" and Dave Clarke's "The Compass," the first disc runs through latter-day favorites like Octave One's "Blackwater," Layo & Bushwacka's "Love Story," Dave Angel's "Arabian Nights," and Laurent Garnier's "The Man With the Red Face." The second disc includes such classics as Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash," Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Model 500's "The Chase," and Leftfield's "Not Forgotten." On the final disc, Aphex Twin ("Didgeridoo"), Underworld ("Rez"), Luke Slater ("Filter 2"), and CJ Bolland ("The Prophet") are featured. Carl Craig comes out ahead of everyone, with tracks released as Paperclip People ("Throw"), Innerzone Orchestra ("Bug in the Bassbin"), and his own name ("At Les") drizzled throughout the second disc. If anything, this is a fine nostalgic set as seen through the eyes of a veteran U.K. clubber. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
